The Strangest Thing

So one day you decide to write and write you do. You write morning, noon and night. Your try to fit in a semblance of a real life, work, family, friends, basic healthcare, maybe too little fitness, and you write a damn book.

For me, the first time around, writing Circling, most of the energy felt like adrenaline. It was probably a nice boost of endorphins. Forget the runner’s high, try the writer’s high! I would get up after hours motionless, except fingers on a keyboard, panting from expended energy. But it was all mental and unsustainable.
Eventually, by the later drafts of Circling, my physiological response to writing normalized, and it scared me. The energy was crazy, but it was magical too. What if the magic deserted me and I went back to being just plain me. I like writer me much more than other me.

So on June 2, 2014, I started my second attempt at writing. Forever Falling picks up a few months after Circling ends. The story travels west with Anna’s brother Callum. Writing was a bit more staid. It was slow to start and my fingers danced much less aggressively across the keyboard. But it kept coming. The questions kept getting asked and answered and the voices kept talking. It took about three and a half months for a very respectable first draft, but it happened.

I typed the magic words today. With Circling I didn’t type them until draft four. Forever Falling is a much cleaner first draft. POV and narrative inexperience plagued me the first time around. Not this time, lessons learned.

Tonight I’ll celebrate with a bourbon and a steak. To me this combination tastes of pure satisfaction.

Over the next few weeks I’ll be working with an editor to put the finishing polish on Circling. I have decided to leave the traditional world of publishing behind. I’d much rather be the pilot of my own destiny. My goal is to have it in the hands of all the world in December.

Raise a glass with me, if you will, tonight. Toast every beginning and every ending. And may every ending lead to a new beginning.

7 Lovely Things

7fd5e-onelovelyblogawardHello again!

This blog hop will catch me up with my fellow writers and our efforts to come out of our writer’s shells.  Okay that was a lie, there is no shell here. Thank you to Bill Cunningham at W. C. Cunningham Writes for including me in this blog hop. Bill is currently working on his first mystery/thriller. Bill is incredibly well read, has a beautiful blog and reviews other author’s work. I am looking forward to reading his novel.

The rules of this blog hop are that I share 7 Lovely Facts about myself, and links to 15 blogs that I enjoy reading. This is tricky because they have to be seven new facts and I am an over sharer. I’ll need to dig deep. If I have  nominated your blog, please don’t feel any obligation to join in but if you do, please link back to the blog of the person who nominated you (that would be me), share 7 facts about you and nominate 15 blogs (or as many as you can).

Here we go with 7 Lovely Facts about me:

1 – Tonight I will probably finish the first draft of Forever Falling. My second novel picks up where Circling left off and readers get to meet more characters. I have decided to self-publish Circling when Forever Falling is complete and then publish Forever Falling a few months later. Tonight I made a connection with an editor and this is actually happening!

IMG955872-12 – Random fact: I have overcome a deathly fear of squirrels. This is serious and I feel like it is a huge accomplishment! In college there were millions, no billions of squirrels at the University of Maryland. I would struggle class to class dodging these aggressive little shits. One winter break I got a job in a mall and met a women who went to the UMD as well. She kept telling me I looked familiar and we were trying to figure out the connection. Finally she asked, “Are you afraid of squirrels?” I’m better now.

3 – I have really excellent siblings and siblings-in-law. We all share fairly close political beliefs (thank goodness) and we are not bothered by our moderate religious diversity. They are all smart as hell, cook fantastically, love movies, music, and are all artistic in their own ways. We all love sci-fi and can listen to the same music, joyfully, for hours on end. Recently, independent of one another, we all developed an affinity for bluegrass. My sister introduced the rest of us to bourbon. One of my brother’s doesn’t know it yet, but he’s going to do the cover for my book, and the other brother just may have some cover art for me. XOXSibs!

4 – When I was ten, a man and a woman in a white van tried to kidnap me. They literally tried to bait me with candy and pull me into their van. I ran and they did not follow.  I am fairly sure this is the root of about 75% of my anxiety. I was a lollipop away from ending up on a milk carton and I am grateful for every day of my life.

5 – I am addicted to the move Lost in Translation. I can’t explain it, I can’t defend it, but I can’t turn away from it. Something about Bill Murray singing Roxy Music on karaoke, speaks to me.

6 –  I find writing male characters far easier than writing women. I feel that their motivations are much clearer and they say what they think with less regard to the consequences. They also spend less time self-criticizing. Understanding women has always been more of a stretch for me. As a woman, this makes me a bit of an asshole. (That might not be lovely…sorry.)

7 – Last but not least, my most important bucket list line item, aside from getting the writing thing going, is that I have a mad desire to learn to make music. I am crazy for an acoustic guitar and a song sung simply. I absolutely have to learn to do this!

That is 7 facts about me, lovely or not. Some of my favorite bloggers are as follows. Apologies to those of you I tagged for 7-7-7 too. This is optional of course, but you do a combo post no one would mind.  If you have already been tapped for this, so sorry! If not, share some of you with the rest of us.

Gary Bailey – Gary’s last post is fantastic. Gary has a serious writer inside of him clawing its way out.
C.A. Guaridiola – Carlos’ last post made me laugh so hard I cried. Okay my love for the post may have been based in narcissism, but it is wonderful  <NOTE: MOM READ THIS>
Susan Kicklighter – She who recommended me for the 7-7-7 blog hop.
Arran Bhansal – My wonderful writer friend.
Adam Dreece – Adam is one of my twitter faves.
Victoria Davenport – The lovely Victoria let me borrow her name for main main character in forever Falling.

My 7-7-7 Challenge

It is funny how in a virtual world you inadvertently make some real connections. I’d like to thank Susan Kicklighter: Writing for Kicks for including me on this 7-7-7 challenge. I literally can not believe I have never met Susan.  She is a writer extraordinaire and damn funny. I can’t get by without some reliable dirty humor. Susan keeps us all entertained. The link above will take you to Susan’s 7-7-7 blog post.

The challenge is for the author to go to page 7 of their current WIP (work in progress), skip down to line 7 and then, share the next 7 lines of their manuscript with you.  I haven’t counted it out yet and I am a little terrified to know what I am  sharing.  I will be honest and not fudge a few lines to avoid a blow job. Okay even I don’t have a blow job on page 7. 😉  Here goes…

<Disclaimer, I fudged a little. Anna was peeing and you were not going to meet Anna peeing.>

Setting the stage. John and Anna are beach house neighbors. Both have their sorrows and secrets.  John is desperate to move beyond the guilt and grief that have haunted him for the last year and a half since his wife’s suicide. Anna is looking for romance and adventure and then a quickie anonymous sperm donor, so she can mother a child in peace, without the interference of a man. I’ll stick in a beach pic to set the mood.

7 sentences of Circling…

He gives her a wave, because he doesn’t know what else to do, and joins her at the bottom of her walkway, which joins with his, and makes its way straight to the beach. He silently passes her a cold, open beer.

They step right into the surf. Warm water licks their ankles.

“It is fucking fantastic here,” she says more to herself than to him.

He appreciates her easy use of the word fuck and he laughs. His laugh feels a bit rusty, but it feels good too.

And there they are – my people! I shudder to tell you how that day ends.

Passing the torch to other writer/bloggers. I am happy to get a peek at some WIPs!

Bill Cunningham at W. C. Cunningham Writes – Bill may just be the best read person on the internet.

C. A. Guardiola Write Away – Carlos may just be the smartest person on the internet.  I’m pretty sure he has seen and memorized every movie ever made.

Gary Bailey Writing – Gary is my brilliant over the pond friend. I don’t know what soccer season is, etc.  Gary knows everything British.

Arran Bhansal’s Confessions of a published author – Arran, also in England, was my first virtual friend.  He reblogged an early post and I have been forever indebted.

This was fun!  Thanks for reading and have a great weekend!
